Witton Castle Lakes

We are one of the premier trout fisheries in the North East. It is located within an extensive area of picturesque parkland just off the A68 at Witton-le-Wear. Our aim is to provide first class fishing within a beautiful peaceful setting. The fishery offers fly fishing on two lakes of approximately 3 acres and 5 acres, and a small ½ acre bait lake ideal for junior anglers. All the lakes are very fertile and support a prolific and varied range of aquatic life including olives, damsel, sedge, caenis, corixae, shrimp, snail, stickleback and minnow. The rich feeding encourages the trout to feed naturally from the beginning of the season, particularly on the abundant hatches of buzzer, olives and damsel.

The lakes contain a good head of fish and are restocked periodically to maintain a high stocking density with quality rainbow and blue trout from 2lb with the present record standing at 25lb 12oz.

Opening dates, times and prices for 2017 are currently under reveiew and will be published on the web site as soon as possible.

The lakes are also available for exclusive evening hire (except Fridays) for parties of 10 or more anglers by prior arrangement. Details of the full range of tickets, fishery rules, catch reports and news can be found on this website

There is ample car parking on site and a purpose built lodge within 50 yards of the lakes which offers a good range of flies and essential tackle, hot and cold drinks, EA licences and male/female toilet facilities. The Fishery officer, will be on hand to provide help and advice to anglers and is ably supported by a team of volunteers who will all help to make sure you have the best chance of catching fish on your visit to the lakes.

Witton Castle Lakes is run by Bishop Auckland District Angling Club which also has over 17 miles of fishing on the River Wear, close to the lakes and 2½ miles on the upper reaches of the River Tees at Eggleston. This provides anglers with the opportunity of fishing the lakes and the river for salmon and sea trout.

The small bait lake is ideal for the young anglers and rod/reel packages are available for hire and sweetcorn worms can be purchased at the lodge. We welcome anglers of all standards from experienced to those just learning the craft and casting/fishing tuition by qualified coaches is available by arrangement.

can you fish the lakes overnight

    March 30, 2014
    • Hi Alan,
Not at the moment, unfortunately we don’t have the staff to cover overnight opening.
Although we will be organising some all night fishing sessions as we did last season, we’ll announce them on this site and our Facebook page.

Hi, I used to be a keen fisherman but unfortunately having kids took a toll on my free time so I sold my tackle to fund a pram!

Im visiting within castle in the summer and I was wondering if you hired out fly fishing gear?

    April 30, 2014
    • Hi Stewart,
Yes we do hire out fishing tackle, which you should be able to hire on the day.
But if you wish you can call in advance to reserve some – give the lodge a ring on 01388 488691
      many thanks

  3. I thought i held the record for the biggest fish, 25lb 12oz caught in may 2008?

    June 3, 2014
    • Thanks for the update Andrew.
There have been a number of staff changes at the lakes since 2008 and that information seemed to be ‘the one that got away’. We have updated our info copy to reflect your catch.
      Many thanks

    • Hi Barry,
The same tickets and prices for fly fishing also apply to the bait lake.
Unfortunately there is no catch and release policy for the bait lake – it’s only catch and keep.
      Many thanks

would like to become a regular visitor, but cannot walk far, can I get my disabled vehicle reasonably close to one of the lakes please? Paul

    September 9, 2015
    • Hi Paul,
Yes we have good access for disabled anglers where your vehicle can be taken close enough to make things easier for you.
Just speak to the guys at the lodge when you arrive and they will be able to direct you.
      many thanks

I would just like to know do you allow kick boats (non-motorized V-boat, float tubes etc.) on your lakes for fly fishing, if so what restrictions/regulations do you have to this regard.

If they are not allowed can you suggest lakes in the near region where they are. I am living here now but originally I am from South Africa and this is mostly how we fish lakes.

    Regards Marcus

    • Hi Marcus,
Unfortunately we do not allow this type of fishing as our lakes are not suitable.
I do not know of any lakes in this area who do but there is the Float Tube UK Association – who know doubt will be able to help.
      Many thanks
