Bright sunshine and flat calm conditions at the beginning of the week made fishing very difficult at Witton Castle Lakes with a catch average of 2 fish per angler. As the week progressed the more overcast conditions saw good hatches of olives and black buzzers and anglers enjoyed some very good ‘top of the water’ sport when the catch average was 3.5 fish per angler.
After a total washout at Witton Castle Lakes on Monday the week improved significantly and welcomed 50 visiting anglers. The total catch for the week reached a decent 170 fish, giving a rod average of 3.5.
The best bags of the week were D.Graham and P.Maysbell with 13 fish each, N.Hodgson with 12 and M.Cromar with 9 fish. Best flies this week have been black & olive ‘f’ flies, shipmans, black buzzer and yellow blob.
One angler caught a tagged fish but unfortunately he hadn’t paid the extra £1, so he couldn’t claim the £50 bonus and had to return the fish.
Tommy Carr, one of our regular anglers will celebrate his 94th birthday on the 30th September. Tommy drives from Sunderland every Monday throughout the season and such is his enthusiasm that he is usually at the entrance before John or Brian get there to open up the fishery.
It has been an excellent week at Witton Castle Lakes, the cooler weather conditions making the fish more active with most days seeing the lakes alive with rising fish. The 60 visiting anglers had some tremendous sport with 260 caught for a 4.3 rod average.
