Starting this Friday (31st) Witton Castle Lakes will be open from 8am until 10pm.
With prolific hatches of lake olives and sedges coming off the lakes this will give anglers a chance to fish the evening rise. If this proves popular with anglers and there’s enough support the late opening will continue on Friday evenings.

The June edition of Total Flyfisher magazine includes an excellent article on England International Simon Robinson’s visit to Witton Castle Lakes with promising local young angler Connor Metcalfe. The Lakes are described as “one of the north east’s premier trout fisheries… the lakes are always well stocked and for many years the fishery has been famous in the north east for its prolific fly hatches and gin clear water which encourages the trout to feed naturally from early Spring onwards throughout the season.
Witton Castle Lakes has had a week to remember, following 24 hours of torrential rain on Saturday 18th May the the River Wear burst its banks and inundated the east and west lake with flood water. Sunday and Monday saw better fishing conditions but only the south lakes fishable for the 35 visiting anglers. The foul weather returned for the rest of the week with strong winds, heavy rain and a high of 8 degrees!
